DIN EN ISO 23386 "Building information modelling and other digital processes in construction - Methodology for describing, creating and maintaining features in interconnected data catalogues" specifies guidelines for defining features in construction as well as a methodology for their creation and maintenance in order to ensure secure and smooth digital exchange between those involved. It also coordinates the interaction of building information with material and product information in BIM-models and regulates a heterogeneous implementation of the material structure of the Data exchange formats IFC.

With regard to the definition of characteristics, the following points are regulated:

- Rules for defining features

- Attributes of the features.

The following provisions apply to the creation and maintenance:

- Definition of the attributes of requests

- Definition and role of experts

- a governance model through the establishment of a steering committee

- Management rules for linking data catalogs based on a feature mapping process.
