BIM Glossary

ISO-Standard

ISO stands for International Standards Organization. This independent body consists of a comprehensive network of experts in various fields. Their collaboration enables them to share and pool experience and knowledge in order to identify best practices and important safety information, as well as to define optimal procedures for various tasks or processes.

An ISO standard is an internationally recognized method. This means that the same guidelines are followed worldwide, resulting in safer and more consistent results. This is beneficial for both organizations and customers. Companies can be assured that this standard is globally followed and recognized, while customers can be confident that they are receiving a safe, high-quality and reliable product or service.

These standards also apply to the BIM-area, for example in the form that the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) have been officially recognized as an ISO standard by ISO 16739 since 2013. building SMART International method, also developed by Information Delivery Manual (IDM)) is also recognized as an ISO standard (ISO 29481-1 and ISO 29481-2). These standards make the Interoperability of BIM applications much easier because they are shared and recognized with each other.
