OIR - Organizational Information Requirements

BIM Glossary

OIR - Organizational Information Requirements

The Organizational Information Requirements (OIR) are essential data that an organization needs to achieve its strategic goals. These requirements arise for various reasons such as strategic business activities, asset management, portfolio planning, regulatory obligations and strategy development. In the area of construction projects or Facility-Management the OIR defines which information must be collected, created, stored and shared throughout the life cycle of a building in order to support the operational goals.

The OIR play a central role in the BIM-process by ensuring that the model and associated information meet the actual needs of the organization. They cover various aspects such as business objectives, specific building or facility requirements, project lifecycle information, data standards, data protection, usability and accessibility of the information. The definition and documentation of the OIR typically occurs at the beginning of a BIM project and serves as a guide for the BIM team to ensure that the model and processes support the business objectives and requirements of the organization.
