buildingSMART International

buildingSMART International (bSI) is a non-profit organization that drives digital transformation in the construction industry. Originally founded in the 1990s as the Industry Alliance for Interoperability (IAI), it later evolved into the International Alliance for Interoperability and was renamed buildingSMART in 2005. There are now over 20 local chapters around the world.

The main goal of buildingSMART is to improve data and information exchange between different software applications in the construction industry, ultimately improving collaboration and digital workflows. The organization has successfully attracted prominent software developers as members and is dedicated to promoting open and interoperable solutions, with a focus on international, open data exchange standards for Building Information Modeling (BIM) liegt.

To achieve its goals, buildingSMART works with three key programs: standards, software certification and membership programs. buildingSMART formulates its own standards for data exchange and collaboration, including standards such as IFC and BCF, with IFC officially recognized as an ISO standard in 2013. In addition, buildingSMART develops tools such as bSDD for describing objects and attributes, MVD for defining subsets of IFC data models and IDM for specifying information requirements.
