IFC-Alignment

BIM Glossary

IFC-Alignment

IFC Alignment allows road or rail routes to be described in the form of an IFC model. It is based on a model that was created jointly by buildingSMART International and the OGC (OpenGIS Consortium), an international organization for geodata. The model is intended to provide an interface between BIM models and geotechnical models.

Furthermore, there is a class in the IFC schema called IfcAlignment that references both the site plan (IfcAlignment2DHorizontal) and the profile plan (IfcAlignment2DVertical). The site plan is made up of the alignment elements straight line (IfcLineSegment2D), circular arc (IfcCircularArcSegment2D) and clothoid or transition arc (IfcClothoidalArcSegment2D). Similar components can be found in the profile plan in the form of straight line (IfcAlignment2DVerSegLine), circular arc (IfcAlignment2DVerSegParabolicArc) and parabola (IfcAlignment2DVerSegCircularArc).
