The BIM coordinator plays a central role in the construction industry and is responsible for the operational implementation of a building's BIM objectives. For projects with numerous specialist planning disciplines, a separate BIM coordinator can be appointed for each discipline, while an overall coordinator also ensembles the entire specialist planning.
The tasks of the BIM coordinator include ensuring the quality of the data created as well as coordinating and integrating the specialist - and sub-models into a coordination model. This includes the development of the BIM execution plan (BAP) in collaboration with the BIM overall coordinator. The BIM coordinator is also responsible for the timely handover of data in accordance with the delivery object plan.
Furthermore, the BIM coordinator defines and coordinates tasks and responsibilities on the basis of BIM processes and applications. He ensures the contractually agreed quality of the data model and guarantees error-free data exchange. He takes part in the model-based planning meetings, deals with conflicts and tasks from the model-based communication and manages the environment "in progress" on the CDE (Common Data Environment) for his own trade.
In addition, the BIM coordinator reads and understands BIM-relevant documents and helps to ensure data quality in terms of conformity with AIA and BAP before transfer to the "shared" environment on the CDE. Overall, the BIM coordinator helps to ensure the effective implementation of BIM objectives over the entire life cycle of a building.
