BIM - Overall coordinator

BIM Glossary

BIM - Overall coordinator

The BIM overall coordinator plays a central role in construction project management, especially in the implementation of BIM. As the counterpart to the BIM manager on the contractor's side, the overall BIM coordinator assumes responsibility for preparing the BIM execution plan (BAP) in close coordination with the client and other project participants.

One of the main tasks of the BIM overall coordinator is to coordinate specialist and sub-models and integrate them into a comprehensive coordination model. With the help of collision checks, potential conflicts are identified and resolved at an early stage. The BIM overall coordinator also organizes and moderates coordination meetings in which changes and tasks in the coordination model are discussed and resolved.

A key aspect is the model-based planning meeting, which the overall BIM coordinator prepares, conducts and follows up on. This contributes to efficient communication in the project. The management of the "shared" environment on the Common Data Environment (CDE) and the timely handover of delivery objects in accordance with the delivery object plan are also part of the responsibilities.

A key difference between a BIM coordinator and a BIM overall coordinator is that BIM coordinators work at the trade level, while BIM overall coordinators are responsible for the entire project across trades. BIM overall coordinators are the main contact persons for the BIM manager and the individual BIM specialist coordinators in the project. Overall, they help to ensure the quality of the data handed over and to ensure its conformity with AIA and BAP before handing over to the "published" environment on the CDE.
